Electricity prices
Average residential electricity price by state, from US Energy Information Administration, Electric Power Monthly, Table 5.6.A, data for March 2026. The US average is 18.56¢/kWh. We plan to refresh these monthly from the EIA API.
Charging cost
Annual home-charging cost = miles per year × (kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × electricity price. Defaults: 13,600 miles a year (about the FHWA US average) and 30 kWh per 100 miles (a typical EV; the EPA range is roughly 25 to 35). This reflects home charging; public DC fast charging costs more.
Cost per 100 miles and gas-equivalent price
Cost per 100 miles = (kWh per 100 miles ÷ 100) × electricity price, so it does not depend on how much you drive. The gas-equivalent price (a revival of the US Department of Energy's retired “eGallon”) is what a gallon of driving costs on electricity: the energy to travel as far as one gallon of gas carries the comparison car, that is, cost per 100 miles × (MPG ÷ 100). Compare it directly to the pump price to see the real gap. Both refresh monthly with the EIA data.
Gas comparison
Annual gasoline cost = miles ÷ MPG × price per gallon. Defaults: 30 mpg and $3.9 per gallon (US average regular gasoline, EIA/AAA). Change any of these in the calculator for your own numbers.
